Like most agencies at the National
Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Council, the Department of Public Works
and Highways made preparations ahead of Typhoon Ompong (known internationally
as Mangkhut).
While the typhoon is crossing into the Philippine Sea, DPWH has instructed
its regional and district engineering offices to ensure the safety and the
integrity of public infrastructures including bridges and buildings.
On its first
Executive Summary today (Midnight), DPWH has reported the prepositioning öf “assets
(heavy equipment, manpower and all logistical needs) on strategic locations
that are safe but near disaster-prone areas.”
The Department said that all regional and district disaster
risk reduction teams were activated and equipped with the necessary safety gear
as well as prepared their communication networks and facilities.
DOST Pagasa reported Typhoon Ompong having a 900-kilometer
diameter and forecasted today to gain maximum winds around 220 kilometers per hour
and gustiness up to 270 kilometers per hour.
The state weather bureau raised Tropical Cyclone Warning
Signal 1 over Catanduanes and Camarines Sur yesterday but there is possibility that
Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quirino, Polillo Islands and Albay may added today. (LP/DPWH)
