ORIENTAL MINDORO, September 19 (PIA): The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration-Department of Science and Technology (Pagasa-DOST) is expecting weather conditions in Mimaropa to improve on Saturday.
But tonight, Pagasa-DOST warned Typhoon Mario will continue to strengthen the Southwest Monsoon (Hanging Habagat) which will pour moderate to heavy rains and create thunderstorms over seaboards of Luzon including Mimaropa.
Mimaropa is facing the West Philippine Sea.
Although the region was not placed under any public storm warning signal nor color-coded rainfall warning, the rains were incessant in Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro and Marinduque since last night.
Malacanang suspended work in public offices and classes the following day in areas affected by heavy rains brought about by Habagat and Typhoon Mario.
Strong winds and big waves rolling at sea forced shipping lines and the Philippine Coast Guard (particularly stations and substations of Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog and Philippine Coast Guard - Palawan) to cancel trips as well as prevent fisherfolks from fishing today.
These cancelled ferry trips included Batangas to Calapan City (Oriental Mindoro), Batangas-Abra De Ilog (Occidental Mindoro), Romblon-Batangas and Odiongan-Batangas as well as their respective return trips.
Trips from Banalacan and Cawit ports (all in Marinduque) to Dalahican port (Lucena City) were suspended.
Vessels were prohibited to leave ports from Caminawit (Occidental Mindoro) and Coron (Palawan) also due to bad weather.
Coast Guard Stations from Calapan (Oriental Mindoro), Maburao (Occidental Mindoro) and Romblon (Romblon) reported to the Office of Civil Defense - Mimaropa (OCD-Mimaropa) that there are 1,168 passengers, 86 rolling cargoes, 11 vessels and 3 motorbancas that were stranded.
The bulk of stranded passengers are in Calapan port (about 1,080) and were assisted by Coast Guard and the Philippine Ports Authority.
OCD-Mimaropa said power has been restored in Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro, the lone municipality in the region that experienced power interruption.
Spillways in Sta. Cruz and Calintaan overflowed and stranded commuters: these spillways were Polo (Barangay Barahan, Sta. Cruz), Anahawin and Villabeck (both in Calintaan).
Calintaan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) assisted people stranded at Barangay Barahan.
On Thursday, Calintaan MDRRMO sent rescuers to help families caught in chest deep flooding in Sitio Mabalik, Barangay Poblacion and those in Barangay Malpalon who were soaked from waist down.
About 200 families evacuated to Calintaan Gymnasium and at the Malpalon National and Elementary school.
At least three houses in Calintaan were reported to be totally damaged.
Magsaysay MDRRMO likewise reported waist-deep flooding in Barangay Calawag and evacuated and provided food and other supplies to 214 people at the Calawag Elementary School.
The flooding in San Jose town was only knee-deep but has affected Barangays Mangarin, Poblacion 3, Poblacion 7, Poblacion 8 and Bubog.
In Paluan town, heavy rains caused meter high floods in Barangays 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and Lumangbayan.
Sitio Aroma, Barangay Tayamaan and agricultural lands in Barangay Payumpon of the Municipality of Mamburao were likewise submerged in flood waters.
Authorities in San Fernando, Romblon, on the hand, reported waist-deep flooding in Barangay Taclobo and Poblacion.
OCD-Mimaropa said these reported flooding may have been subsiding or have already subsided by now. (LP)
