Relief assistance to Nona’s survivors in Mimaropa reach more than Php 9-M

QUEZON CITY, December 20 (PIA) --- The Department of Social Welfare and Development – Mimaropa reported on Saturday more than Php 9-M  (as of  3 pm, December 19) worth of relief assistance has been provided to survivors of Typhoon Nona in the region.

Half of the amount is the cost of family food packs distributed by local government units while the other half were fund augmented by the National Government.

Non-government organizations donated food packs worth Php 50,080.   

Since December 13, DSWD-Mimaropa, as well as the rest of the agency members of the Mimaropa Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, has been monitoring Typhoon Nona.

Food packs were prepositioned in various parts of the region to serve far and isolated barangays also known as Geographically Isolated Depressed Areas.

For instance, DSWD-Palawan and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office collaborated in the stock piling of relief goods in Coron-Busuanga Area.

Based on its monitoring, DSWD-Mimaropa reported that Oriental Mindoro  continues to operate 113 evacuation centers serving 4, 985 families or 20, 567 individuals.

In terms of damaged houses, Oriental Mindoro the highest number in the region: 20,314 (totally damaged) and 17,842 (partially damaged).

DSWD Mimaropa’s Quick Response Team is monitoring and validating data received in the field for further resource augmentation on a 24 hour basis. (LP)

LUNGSOD QUEZON, ika-20 ng Disyembre (PIA) --- Inihayag ng Department of Social Welfare and Development – Mimaropa nitong Sabado na mahigit sa Php 9-M  (batay sa ulat nitong  ika-19 ng Disyembre, ika-3 ng hapon) na halaga ng  relief assistance ang naibigay sa mga  nakaligtas o survivor ng Typhoon Nona sa buong rehiyon.

Kalahati ng halaga ay mga family food pack na ipinamahagi ng mga lokal na pamahalaan  samantala ang nalalabi ay pondong natipon at ibinahagi ng pambansang pamahalaan.

Nag-ambag din ang mga non-government organization na family food packs na nagkakahalaga ng Php 50,080.   

Mula pa noong ika-13 ng Disyembre, nagbabantay na sa pagkilos ng Bagyong Nona ang DSWD-Mimaropa, kasama ang iba pang ahensiyang kasapi ng  Mimaropa Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Maagang nagposisyon ang regional office ng mga food pack sa iba’t-ibang bahagi ng rehiyon lalo na yung mga bayan na may malalayong barangay o kung tawagin ay Geographically Isolated Depressed Areas.

Isang halimbawa ay sa  gawi ng Coron at Busuanga kung saan nagtulungan ang DSWD-Palawan at ang kanilang Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office sa pagtitipon ng relief goods.

Batay sa kanilang monitoring, iniulat ng DSWD-Mimaropa ang Oriental Mindoro ang may mataas na bilang ng mga nasirang tahanan: 20,314 (ganap na nasira) and 17,842 (bahagyang nasira).

Nagpapatuloy din ang operasyon ng lalawigan sa may  113 evacuation centers kung saan 4, 985 families or 20, 567 individuals sineserbisyuhan.

Ang Quick Response Team ng DSWD Mimaropa ay walang tigil ang pagbabantay at sa kasusuri ng datos na nanggaling sa kanilang mga field offices hinggil sa mga kababayan at mga lugar na naapektuhan ng Bagyong Nona. (LP)

Damage assessment, relief operations sa Mimaropa, tuloy-tuloy

QUEZON CITY, ika-19 ng DIsyembre (PIA) – Lumilinaw na ang lawak ng pinsala ng Bagyong Nona sa Mimaropa partikular sa Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque at Romblon.

Ayon sa  Sitrep No. 14 ng Office of Civil Defense – Mimaropa, mahigit sa Php 647-M ang pinagsanib na halaga ng  pinsala sa mga gusali ng mga paaralan, pagamutan at regional health units, mga pasilidad ng gobyerno, palengke, food control projects, mga simbahan, mga kalsada at tulay.

Mahigit sa Php 288-M ang halaga ng pinsala sa linya ng mga kuryente at maging sa mga pasilidad sa tubig.

Sa Palay, ang halaga ng napinsala ay umabot sa halos Php 13-M, Php 531-M sa High Value Crops, Php 338-M para sa iba pang pananim.

Limang milyong piso ang halaga ng mga nasirang bangka, Php 1.8-M naman sa livestock, at Php 3.3-M sa pangisdaan.

Maraming sinirang bahay ang bagyong Nona sa Mimaropa: sa Occidental Mindoro ay 871, Romblon ay 2,326, sa Marinduque ay 5,312 at ang pinakamarami sa Oriental Mindoro… 47,242.

Inaasahang magpapalabas ng mga ahensya ng pamahalan ng mga pondong pang-kumpuni o pagpapatayo ng bahay, mga binhing pamalit ng mga palay at iba pananim at iba pang ayuda para malutas o maibsan ang epekto ng pamiminsala ng Bagyong Nona.  (LP)

Pagasa-DOST, nagbabala ng malakas na hangin, napakaalong kanlurang babaybayin ng Timog-Luzon

LUNGSOD QUEZON , Ika-19 ng Disyembre (PIA) ---Hinikayat ng Pagasa-DOST ang mga mangingisda sa Occidental Mindoro at sa Palawan na huwag munang pumalaot ngayong araw sa kanilang mga karagatan dahil magiging maalon hanggang napakaalon sa kanlurang baybayin.

Ang  kanlurang baybayin ay makakaranas ng maulap na himpapawid na may magaan hanggang katamtaman pag-ulan at manaka-nakang kulog at kidlat.

Ang lakas ng hangin ay nasa pagitan ng 51-63 kilometro bawat oras at ang malakas hanggang sa gale force wind ay may kinalaman sa paglakas ng amihan o Northeast monsoon.

Sa ilalim ng mga nasabing kondisyon,  ang taas ng alon ay aabot sa pagitan ng 3.4 hanggang  4.5 metro.

Inalerto din ng Pagasa-DOST ang mga nagmamay-ari o operator ng mga malalaking sasakyang pandagat hinggil sa maalong karagatan.

Samantala, ang  Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque at  Romblon ay magiging maulap na may magaan hanggang katamtaman na pag-ulan.

Katamtaman hanggang malakas na pag-ihip ng hangin ang maghahari sa mga nasabing lalawigan at ang katubigan sa kanilang baybayin ay magiging katamtaman hanggang sa napaka-alon. (LP)

Pagasa-DOST warns of strong winds, rough seas in Southern Luzon’s western seaboard

QUEZON CITY, December 19 (PIA) ---Pagasa-DOST said the western seaboard of Southern Luzon, particularly in Occidental Mindoro and Palawan, will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms.

The wind force will be between 51-63 kph and the waves in the area will be rough to very rough.

The strong to gale force wind is associated with the surge of Northeast monsoon.

Under these conditions, the height of waves will be between 3.4 to 4.5 meters.

Pagasa-DOST alerted large sea vessels of the big waves while fishermen in boats and smaller sea-crafts are advised to avoid the sea today.

Meanwhile, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque and Romblon will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains.

Moderate to strong winds will prevail over these provinces and their coastal waters will be moderate to rough. (LP)

   

Damaged assessment, relief operation continue in Mimaropa

LUNGSOD QUEZON,  December 19 (PIA) – The passage of Typhoon Nona in the Mindoro provinces, Marinduque and Romblon left a lot of people homeless, ruined buildings and spoiled crops.

But with the power returning, roads cleared and passable and port operation running regularly, authorities have the chance to move around to deliver relief goods, temporary shelters and other basic services.

According to Sitrep No. 14 of the Office of Civil Defense – Mimaropa, the total cost of damages in school and government buildings, hospitals and regional health units, markets,  food control projects, churches and roads and bridges has reached Php 647-M.

Damages in power lines and water facilities were worth more than Php 288-M.

Wasted rice fields was valued at least Php 13-M; for High Value Crops, Php 531-M; Php 338-M for other crops.

Wrecked boats amounted to Php 5-M; in livestock, Php 1.8-M and in fisheries,  Php 3.3-M.  

The number of total and partially damaged houses is high in Mimaropa: Occidental Mindoro, 871; Romblon  2,326,  Marinduque, 5,314; at Oriental Mindoro, 47,242. (LP)

Power resumes, roads cleared in typhoon-hit Mimaropa provinces

QUEZON CITY, 19 Disyembre (PIA) --- Government is encouraging truck owners to participate in the delivery of relief goods and shelter materials to typhoon hit areas.

Undersecretary Alexander Pama of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council made the statement in his recent interviews.

Among the targeted areas are the Mimaropa provinces:  the Mindoros, Romblon and Marinduque.

Based on  Sitrep No. 14 ng Office of Civil Defense-Mimaropa, the region’s ports have resumed regular operations.

Power has been restored in most towns of Occidental Mindoro as well as to Bongabong, Roxas, Mansala, Bulalacao and Calapan City of Oriental Mindoro and Gasan and Sta. Cruz of Marinduque.

All national roads in Marinduque at Oriental Mindoro are now cleared of debris and passable.

Oriental Mindoro and Torrijos, Marinduque have declared state of calamity to enable local executives to mobilize calamity funds for rehabilitation.   

About  121,362 individuals (or 29, 261 families) were assisted in evacuation centers. (LP)

Samantala, sinisikap ng mga awtoridad na maisaayos ang mga kababayan sa Mimaropa matapos ang pagragasa ng Bagyong  Nona.

Update sa mga kalsadang naapektuhan ng Bagyong Nona

PIA-4B: Iniulat ng OCD-Mimaropa na nagsasagawa ng clearing operation ang mga tauhan ng DPWH sa Strong Republic NautIcal Highway sa Socorro, Oriental Mindoro kung saan may mga puno na natumba. Una rito, nagpakalat ang DPWD ng mga maintainance team para bantayan ang mga national road, tulay at iba pang imprastraktura. Nagpapatuloy pa ang pag-papaulan ng Bagyong Nona sa lalawigan. PIA-4B: Umabot sa 4,950 ang bilang ng nailikas na mga kababayan sa Mimaropa. Sa ulat ng OCD-Mimaropa ngayong tanghali,  ang pinakamaraming evacuees ay nasa marinduque: 3,827. Mimaropa's response teams preparing for Typhoon Nona's passage

QUEZON CITY, December 14 (PIA) --- Response units in Mimaropa prepared their equipment and manpower before Typhoon Nona passes through the region.

The Coast Guard Districts of Southern Tagalog and Palawan are advised to implement the the strict observance of the guidelines on the movement of vessels during heavy weather

The guidelines prevent ships from venturing into the seas while public storm warning signals are in effect; only vessels at sea are exempted to allow them to find shelter.

The assessment of the number of ships and people stranded in Mimaropa's ports is still being determined.

But as of 8 pm last night, the number of stranded ships and passengers in various ports in other provinces are as follows: 3,272 passengers; 30  vessels; 9 motor bancas  9 and 115 rolling cargoes.

The Western Command (Westcom) and the Army's 203 Brigade has activated and put on standy their rescue platoons/units from its various companies.

In its Severe Weather Bulletin No.8, Pagasa-DOST reported that Romblon and Marinduque are now under Public Storm Warning Signal No. 2 (PSWS No. 2) while PSWS No. 1 is in effect over the Mindoro provinces. #

Mimaropa-RDRRMC members preposition supplies, assets ahead of Nona's landfall

QUEZON CITY,  December 14 (PIA) --- Members of the  Mimaropa Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council are on red alert status and monitoring the passage of Typhoon Nona as it makes it way to the region through the Northern Samar and Bicol provinces.

Based on the forecasted track of the typhoon, the provinces of Romblon, Marinduque and Oriental Mindoro are in its path towards West Philippine Sea.

In its Severe Weather Bulletin No.8, Pagasa-DOST reported that Romblon and Marinduque are now under Public Storm Warning Signal No. 2 (PSWS No. 2) while PSWS No. 1 is in effect over the Mindoro provinces.

Office of Civil Defense - Mimaropa coordinated with response agencies and deployed staff in Oriental Mindoro and Palawan for emergency monitoring and logistic support.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government has advised all local government operations officers (LGOOs) to take appropriate actions before the typhoon make a landfall.

The Police Regional Office-Mimaropa and the Bureau of Fire Protection likewise alerted their assets while the Romblon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office are coordinating with its municipal counterparts.

The Deparment of Social Welfare and Development has activated its Field Offices Crisis Intervention, Regional Quick Reaction Teams and  Social Welfare and Development Teams (SWADTs).

 DSWD also pre-positioned its food and non food items in geographically isolated depressed areas.
The Department of Health has raised the white alert and prepositioned assorted medicines and supplies in provincial hospitals and centers.

The Motor Vehicle User Charge workers and maintainance crew of the District Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Teams of the  Department of Public Works and Highways are monitoring the national roads, bridges and other public infrastructures.

The Department of Agriculture, on the other hand, has made their planting materials available to replace crops that will be affected by the passage of Typhoon Nona.

Six ports in Mimaropa suspend operations due to Nona

QUEZON CITY, December 14 (PIA)---At least six ports in Mimaropa have suspended operations in response to the public storm warning signals raised by Pagasa DOST  due to Typhoon Nona.

These ports are Poctoy (Odiongan) and Romblon (Romblon town) of Romblon; Banalacan (Mogpog) and Cawit (Boac) of Marinduque; and Calapan (Calapan) and Dangay (Roxas) in Oriental Mindoro.

Once a public storm warning signal (PSWS) is in effect in a province, the Philippine Coast Guard will not allow any kind of vessel to sail except for those ships that are already in the ocean and searching for shelter.

As of 11 Sunday night, Romblon and Marinduque are under PSWS No. 2 while Oriental Mindoro is still under PSWS No. 1.

The seas covered by PSWS No. 2 will have 4 – 14 meter high waves and storm surges may occur in coastal barangays.  #

Operasyon sa Ilang mga pantalan sa Mimaropa, suspindido na dahil kay Nona

LUNGSOD QUEZON, Ika-14 ng Disyembre (PIA)---Yung pong mga kababayang gustong magbiyahe papuntang Romblon, Marinduque at Oriental Mindoro, huwag nang magpumilit dahil walang pantalan magagamit.

Sa Romblon, suspindido na ang operasyon (simula alas-5 ng hapon) sa Poctoy port sa bayan ng Odiongan at sa Romblon Port ng bayan ng Romblon.

Sa Marinduque, halos kasabay ng mga pantalan sa Romblon ang pagsuspindi ng operasyon sa mga pantalan ng Banalacan sa Mogpog at ng Cawit ng Boac.

Kaninang alas-8 ng gabi, humabol ang Calapan port ng Calapan City at ng Dangay port ng Roxas sa lalawigan ng Oriental Mindoro.

Ang suspension ng operasyon ay bilang pagkilala sa Memorandum Circular 02-2013 ng Philippine Coast Guard na walang palalayaging sasakyang pandagat kung may babala ng bagyo sa kanilang kinaroroonan maliban na lang kung inabot sa dagat at naghahanap ng masisilungan.

Kaninang alas-11 ng gabi, itinaas ng Pagasa ang Public Storm Warning Signal No. 2 sa Romblon at Marinduque samantalang nanatili pa rin sa PSWS No. 1 ang Oriental Mindoro. #

Pagasa DOST raises public storm warnings over Romblon, Marinduque and Oriental Mindoro

Pagasa-DOST has raised Public Storm Warning Signals in three provinces of Mimaropa that are within the forecasted track of Typhoon Nona.

Based on Severe Weather Bulletin No. 6-A, Romblon is now under Public Storm Signal No.2 (PSWS No. 2) while PSWS No. 1 is in effect over Marinduque and Oriental Mindoro.

Classes in kindergarten, elementary and high school are automatically suspended provinces under PSWS No. 2  while kindergarten students are the only one without classes in areas under PSWS No.1

Tourists and commercial sea travelers are advised to consult Coast Guard Southern Tagalog District to check if sea traveling in and out of Romblon, Marinduque and Oriental Mindoro are suspended.

Under Coast Guard’s Memorandum Circular No. 02-2013, vessels of any tonnage are prevented from sailing when Public Storm Warning Signals are hoisted over their locations unless looking for shelter.

Areas under PSWS No. 2 are expected to experience 61-120 kilometers per hour with 24 hrs. from the time the bulletin was released.

These kind of winds can tilt electric posts and power towers, tore off old roofs, uproot at put down trees, damage rice and corn fields and other damages.

Dahil kay Bagyong Nona, babala ng bagyo nakataas sa Romblon, Marinduque at Oriental Mindoro

Itinaas ng Pagasa-DOST ang kanilang babala sa bagyo sa ilang mga lalawigan sa Mimaropa para makapaghanda sa paparating na bagyong si Nona.

Kaninang 7 ng gabi, nagpalabas ang Pagasa ng Severe Weather Bulletin No. 6-A kung saan pinaiiral ngayon sa Romblon ang Public Storm Signal No.2.

Nananatili ang Public Storm Signal No. 1 sa Marinduque ngunit kasama na nito ang Oriental Mindoro.

Kapag may Signal No. 2 sa lugar, antimanong walang pasok sa kindergarten, elementarya at highschool.

Kung Signal No. 1 naman, kindergarten lang ang antimanong walang pasok.

Pinapayuhan ang mga biyahero na kumunsulta muna sa Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog dahil karaniwan pinagbabawalan nang pumalaot ang anumang sasakyang pandagat sa sandaling nakataas na ang babala ng bagyo sa kanilang mga lugar.

Batay ito sa Memorandum Circular No. 02-13 ng Coast Guard kung saan sinasabing walang sasakyang pandagat ang papayagan makapaglayag kapag nakataas ang anumang babala ng bagyo sa kinalulugaran nito maliban lang kung maghahanap ng  masisilungan.

Ang mga lugar sa ilalim ng PSWS No. 2 ay makakaranas ng lakas hg hangin mula  61 hanggang 120 kilometro bawat oras sa loob ng 24 oras mula nang maipalabas ang babala.

Ang mga ganitong kalalakas ng hangin ay may kakayahan magpayuko ng mga poste ng ilaw at tore, magpalipad ng mga lumang bubong, makabunot o makapagpatumba ng puno, makasira ng palayan at maisan, at iba pang malilit hanggang katamtamanang pinsala.

Sa karagatan, ang mga alon ay maaring tumaas mula apat hanggang 14 na metro at posibleng magkaroon ng daluyong o storm surge sa mga baybaying barangay.

Tatlumpu hanggang anim na pung kilometro bawat oras ang lakas ng hangin na mararamdaman sa mga probinsyang nasa ilaim ng PSWS No.1.

Nanganganib sa ganitong mga hangin  ang mga kabahayan  na gawa sa mga magagaan na materyales at ang mga palay na namumulaklak pa lang. #

Nona strengthens as it moves to Northern Samar, Bicol

TS Nona has intensified as it moves towards Northern Samar and Bicol Region.

Based on Pagasa-DOST’s Severe Weather Bulletin No. 6,  maximum sustained winds has gone from  110 kilometers per hour to  140 kilometers per hour near the center.

Gustiness went up from 140 kilometers per hour to 170 kilometers per hour.

Typhoon Nona is forecasted to move west at 19 kilometers per hour.

Marinduque and  Romblon are now under Public Storm Signal No. 1 which means these provinces will experience strong winds from  30-60 kilometers  within 36 hours  from the time the PSWS was raised.

When PSWS No. 1 is in effect in a province, classes in kindergarten and most probably sea travel in and out of the area are suspended.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that  that the Department of Social Welfare and Development has stocked food packs and stand by funds ready in the field offices.

Among these field office is the DSWD – Mimaropa with 8,855 family food packs and with Php 4-M standby funds available when needed.

Bagyong Nona, lumakas; Marinduque at Romblon, Signal No. 1 na

Lumakas ang Bagyong Nona habang papalapit sa Kabikulan at Hilagang Samar.

Batay sa Severe Weather Bulletin No. 6 ng Pagasa-DOST,  mula sa dating 110 kilometro bawat oras, naging 140 kilometro bawat ang lakas ng hangin ng Bagyong Nona.

Ang dating pagbugso na  140 kilometro bawat oras ay naging 170 kilometro bawat oras.

Kumikilos ang Bagyong Nona pa-kanluran sa bilis na 19 kilometro bawat oras.

Itinaas na rin ng Pagasa-DOST ang Public Storm Warning Signal No. 1 sa Marinduque at Romblon dahil madadaanan ang mga lalawigan ito alinsunod  sa forecast track ng Bagyo Nona.

Ibig sabihin ng PSWS No.1, ang mga lugar na nasa ilalim nito ay makakaranas ng  lakas ng hangin mula 30-60 kilometro sa loob ng 36 na oras mula nang ilabas ang babala.

Kapag, nakataas ang PSWS No. 1, antimanong walang pasok sa kindergarten at malamang suspindido ang mga byaheng pandagat papaalis at papasok sa mga apektadong lalawigan.

Samantala, batay sa ulat ng National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council,  ang Department of Social Welfare and Development –Mimaropa  ay may naitabing  8,855 family food packs at mayroong Php 4-M standby funds na pwedeng magamit kung kakailanganin. #

DOH Mimaropa launches health fair for senior citizens

The Department of Health – Mimaropa is set to tour a new program aimed promoting wellness and welfare of senior citizens.

Launched on Thursday in Boac, Marinduque, the Senior Citizens’ Health Fair aimed at raising public awareness on the Republic Act 9994 known as the “Expanded Senior Act of 2010“ which provides for additional benefits and privileges to senior citizens in recognition of their contribution in nation building.

The objective is to institutionalize and promote their wellbeing in the community advocating for healthy practices that will prevent and control diseases among adults; give recognition to the significant contribution of individual senior citizens organizations in the promotion of programs for the welfare of senior citizen; and increase awareness of the family and community on the importance of senior citizens.

“This program will be done in all the five provinces of the region to promote activities, projects and services that will address the needs of our elders, especially those with disabilities and to raise public consciousness on their needs and concerns and to prevent their discrimination and abuse,” DOH-Mimaropa Regional Director Eduardo C. Janairo said.

“We are working to inspire, motivate and encourage senior citizens to continue their effort in guiding younger generations into productive endeavors through active participation in the community. This is the age where they are at the prime of their life and very competent to render expertise and skills. We must gain the most out of their life’s experience and leadership and use it to further contribute for the advancement of our society,” Director Janairo added. 

Featured in the launching are ballroom dancing, group line dancing and a twin contest for lola and Lolo: the Kisig and Gandang Walang kupas pageants.

Around 400 people from various municipalities participated in the launching. #

Una, ang Mimaropa ay mayroon UNA--- Ulirang Nakatatanda Awards--- kung saan kinikilala ang kontribusyon ng mga nakatatanda sa  sa kanilang samahan, pederasyon, pamayanan at sa buong rehiyon.

Ngayon, ang Mimaropa ay mayroon nang Senior Citizens’ Health Fair na inilunsad ng Department of Health sa Boac, Marinduque.

Ayon kay DOH Mimaropa Regional Director Eduardo Janairo, nilalayon din ng Senior Citizens’ Health Fair na bigyan ng pagkilala sa mga nakatatandang  patuloy na nagbabahagi ng kanilang kaalaman, kasanayan at karanasan sa mga nakababata para sa ikauunlad ng pamayanan.

Pero ang naiiba sa Senior Citizens’ Health Fair, binibigyan diin ang pagtuturo at pagpapataas ng kaalaman ng mga nakatatanda sa mga nilalaman ng  Republic Act No. 9994 o mas kilala bilang “Expanded Senior Act of 2010.

Sa ilalim ng batas, mababatid ang mga pribilehiyo at mga karagdagan benipisyo sa mga nakatatanda.

Gayundin, hangad din ng Senior Citizen’s Health Fair na maipakalat ang mga paraan para maging malusog ang mga kababayan habang nagkaka-edad.

Ang Senior Citizens’Health Fair ay inilunsad ngayong Huwebes sa Bayan ng Boac, Marinduque.

Tampok sa Senior Citizens’Health Fair ang Ballroom Dancing, Group-line dancing at ang kambal patimpalak na Kisig at Gandang Walang Kupas pageant.

May 400 kababayan mula sa iba't ibang munisipyo ng Marinduque ang dumalo sa paglulunsad ng Senior Citizens'Health Fair.

Idinagdag ni Director Janairo na kanilang dadalhin ang Senior Citizens’Health Fair sa iba pang lalawigan para makinabang ang iba pang mga kababayan sa Mimaropa.

Pinoy corn breeder cited for breakthru work in molecular plant breeding

For his excellent work in the formulation and implementation of a more improved corn breed variety which now benefits 20,000 Filipino farmers throughout the country, former University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) professor Peter S. Guzman recently got the highest and most distinguished award UPLB gives to its alumni.

A commercial pipeline breeder of Monsanto, Guzman was cited by the UPLB College of Agriculture Alumni Association (UPLBCAAA) as this year’s Distinguished Alumnus for his significant contributions in the development of plant breeding for the local agricultural sector. The award was presented at the 97th UPLB Loyalty Day and Alumni Homecoming last October 9.

The UPLB Distinguished Alumnus Award recognizes those alumni who excelled in their fields of endeavor, especially those who made an impact in addressing development issues.

In giving the award to Guzman, UPLBCAAA cited his significant contributions to improving the school’s instruction, research and extension and for his numerous scientific breakthrus at Monsanto.

At UPLB, Guzman developed a graduate course on then emerging field of molecular plant breeding, while his extension work included the formulation and implementation of a seed production and distribution program for yellow and white corn varieties, benefitting around 20,000 resource poor farmers in the country.

He also took part in leading the establishment of Monsanto’s Harrisburg Corn Research Station in South Dakota, US.

“My work with Monsanto allowed me to discover breakthrough solutions that improve the lives of our farmers. This recognition inspires me to further my research on modern agricultural practices to address the pressing problems of food security and sustainability” Guzman said.

Guzman holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, cum laude, and Master’s degree in Plant Breeding from UPLB, a Doctorate degree from Iowa State University, and a post-doctorate degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He was previously an assistant professor and science research specialist at UPLB prior to his ten-year stint at Monsanto, which began in 2005.
